The Preacher On AMC

I don’t normally write reviews for television shows or movies because well, I’m kinda easy to please. I mean really, I watch reality television, so what can you expect, right? To my credit though, I watch reality TV knowing that it’s not real…well, some of it’s not real. Bryan, don’t crush my illusions completely, okay?

Because of this, I don’t think it’s exactly fair for me to proclaim that I’m any kind of expert when it comes to good writing. For instance, I absolutely loved The Grinder. I found the overstated humor to be hilarious, so of course it got cancelled. I also enjoyed the sci-fi cop drama Almost Human but that got the axe too. So let’s hope that me liking this series isn’t a bad omen:

The Preacher

Oh! My! Gosh!

I’ve watched the first episode twice. First with my husband, and then with my one of my kids. I liked it that much. It’s based on the comic book series Preacher, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. I don’t want to give away too much so I’ll just quote the tagline from IMDB, “After a supernatural event at his church a preacher enlists the help of a vampire to find God.”

I had no idea that Seth Rogan was even involved in the series until I watched Talking Preacher (an after-show with Chris Hardwick) the next day. But it makes perfect sense because there was a touch of comedy to The Preacher that I found appealing. Dark humor, for sure, but still, I laughed at some very terrible things that happened during the episode.

It is very over the top, almost in a Tarantino sort of way. So if you’re not into that sort of thing, you won’t like this show at all. It’s also got quite a bit of violence along with crude humor so be warned. But the characters are amazing and I can't wait to get their back stories.

I’m looking forward to the second episode. Has anyone else seen it or are you planning to give it a try?

  1. Yeah, it's out there all right. Quirky characters. Not sure about it yet but I am going to keep watching.

    1. That's what my hubby said. He said he'd give it a few more episodes then decide if he'd keep watching.

  2. I've never heard of this show. The only new 'original' show I think I've ever watched from the beginning is 'Impastor', last summer.

    1. I think I remember seeing the previews for that last year. Was it any good?

  3. I've heard other people rave about this show too. If I weren't so busy with other things to watch right now, I'd give it a go. I understand there's a character named Arseface -- how can you resist THAT?

    1. Yes! There is a character in there named Arseface and from what hear, he's a recurring character. Can't wait to learn more about him too.

    2. I've decided to make time for this show! I've recorded the first episode and am recording the second right now. I hope to watch them soon and get in the swing of things!

  4. I've got it saved to watch. Seth Rogen rarely makes anything I like as he does the same crap over and over again. But this sounds different, so we shall see.

    1. I'm a fan of Rogen's comedies (of course, right?) but this show had none of that kind of "immature" humor in at. Just dark humor. Hope you like it.

    1. It made me want to read the graphic novels, Fran. The after show made them sound very interesting.

  6. We watched it. I liked it but I hope it doesn't go into any really weird religious areas.

  8. Hi Elsie,

I'm not aware of that show. It seems to have captivated you. No doubt, it will end up being shown over here in the UK. Sometimes, when I switch on the TV, I wonder where all the British shows are.

    Take care, Elsie.

    1. I think all of the British actors have come here, Gary. Between The Walking Dead, Fear, and now Preacher, AMC seems to be taking them all. hehe

      Hope you're doing well!

  9. Hi Elsie - I don't watch these sorts of shows - but I know many enjoy them. Like Gary - similar thoughts ... thankfully we have some good documentaries and productions - still each to her own! Cheers and continue to enjoy it .. Hilary

  10. I kept seeing advertisements for this show during the commercial breaks of The Walking Dead!! This is something I definitely need to get into. Are the commercial breaks as long, common, and overwhelming as during TWD? If yes, then I'll wait for it to go On Demand. lol

    1. Yes, the commercial breaks were plentiful during the first episode. Maybe it's an AMC thing? But a lot of them were for their own shows so it wasn't too bad. I just fast forwarded through them.

  11. I watched at the first episode. It grabbed me initially, but as it went on with all those flashbacks and stuff I found myself losing interest. But, I never liked the Kill Bill movies either, and this show reminded me of that. Still, I might watch another one.

    1. I agree with you, it was very similar to Kill Bill. Very over the top with the blood, action, and violence. But that's the kind of thing that grabs my attention. My hubby says he'll give it another episode too.

    1. It's an interesting show and I just ordered the comics. I'll have to see what you wrote about TV. A past time for me when I'm sick.

  14. Oh, I was trying to decide whether I wanted to watch this! Now I am definitely going to give it a go. I know we have liked lots of the same things so I feel sure I will love it too. Yay, I love discovering a new series. :)

    1. Yes, Julie, you and I have similar tastes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. As I said, I tend to be easily amused but this show really piqued my interest and now that we've seen the second episode my hubby and kids like it too.

  15. Oh, how did I know you would love this show? Yeah, this more than makes up for that love of reality TV. I love it. Just love it. Then again, I read all of the comics, and it's still my favorite comic series of all time. Needless to say, I think it has the potential to be my new favorite show.

I know you said above you haven't read the comics. If you're into comics, I would definitely recommend them.

    1. I took your advice, Bryan, and ordered the first book of the comics. I can't wait to get it and dig in. I think it'll be perfect to bring to the beach. I'm glad you like it too, but of course you do, you're also a big fan of TWD (season finale disappointment aside).

Hey, reality television allows me to appreciate the lack of drama in my life! haha

  16. Hey Girl. We don't have TV so I didn't even know this was out. But I'm more of a Great British Bake Off, viewer on the xbox.

    Happy Watching :-)
